Can you give us a brief description of your character and how she fits into the
story?
SIENNA MILLER: Emma is an MI6 agent; she’s a very discreet, highly intelligent woman who’s a real tough cookie in the world of espionage. Her mentor has got himself into a lot of trouble, and she’s been following him without him knowing, trying to find out what’s going on. And that’s where she crosses paths with Jack. Together, they team up and uncover what’s going on.
I think what attracted me most to her was her resilience, her toughness and her ability not to give too much away. It’s quite difficult to play someone so restrained. It’s not in my nature. So it’s been a challenge, so to speak, to tone down that vulnerability or warmth that I think I have naturally and try to show a tougher exterior.
It’s something I hadn’t really done before, but I’ve really enjoyed doing it.
What drew you to the story?
SIENNA MILLER: I think I’d been wanting to work with John Krasinski for a while, and we’re friends outside of work as well. I’d been wanting to make a big film that people would enjoy
watching. Throughout my career, I’ve always been really drawn to small, independent projects, and I think I just felt ready to do something more high-profile and fun, and to learn how to use weapons and fight. And the idea of playing an MI6 agent really appealed to me, as did being part of a big, fun franchise that people are really looking forward to.
Tell us about the action scenes, your work with Lee Morrison and the
training you did.
SIENNA MILLER: Lee Morrison is, in my experience, the best stunt coordinator ever. He’s very professional and very confident, and the way he approaches it is almost like a director. He really masters the language of cinema, so everything is very clear and concise and there’s never anything superfluous. I’ve loved working with him. And then I’ve been training with an incredible weapons expert, Ross Upton, who has years of experience in real combat and has been
correcting me. It’s harder than it looks to handle an assault rifle and move naturally with it, and it’s taken me a while to get the hang of it. But in such capable hands, it’s been a real pleasure, and there’s also a whole other team we’ve been working with. Everyone is at the top of their game and I’ve learnt so much doing this.
What do you hope will resonate with the audience as they watch this film?
SIENNA MILLER: I think the audience is going to encounter a very fresh take on the series. I think John—who can talk about this much better than I can—feels there’s much more scope and time to delve deeper into the characters. We have the first real high-speed car chase through London – I only found out recently – and it’s going to be spectacular. I think, ultimately,
you get to know the characters better, the settings are spectacular and the action sequences are very well done and quite complex. So, hopefully, you’ll have a great
time, get emotionally invested and be left wanting more.
